About Galway Civic Trust

  1. Our objective is the preservation, protection and enhancement of Galway's natural and built environment for the benefit of all. We adopt a hands-on approach and undertake improvement projects which otherwise would not happen.
  2. Established in 1992, we have completed over 50 projects, ranging from the erection of historic wall plaques to the refurbishment of Rusheen Bay Bird Sanctuary and restoration of the Fishery Tower at Wolfe Tone Bridge.
  3. In partnership with FÁS, Galway City Council and Galway County Council, Galway Chamber of Commerce & Industry, The Heritage Council of Ireland, and the community, we undertake works for the enhancement of Galway city and county.

Message from the Manager
Welcome to the website of Galway Civic Trust / Dúchas na Gaillimhe. We hope to provide information and insights into the many projects the Trust has undertaken since its inception in 1992. You can read in detail about the restoration of the Fishery Tower, including Conservation Architect Gerry McManus' report. If you would like to learn more about Galway's history and heritage download our Education Pack. The Pack was originally produced for 5th and 6th classes (10-12 year olds), but provides a wealth of information for all ages.

Our biggest project to date, the conservation of Mutton Island Lighthouse and Keepers' Cottages with Galway City Council, is proceeding apace. The process is being fully documented and recorded, and a full exhibition will be presented upon completion.

Finally, an award from the Heritage Council for a joint project by Galway Civic Trust and Galway City Council Heritage Office will see six plaques 'Mapping The Town Wall' unveiled this autumn.

Galway Civic Trust aims to inspire pride and good citizenship through carrying out visible projects of enhancement in Galway. We welcome your comments and suggestions. Please see the 'Contact us' page on this site.
