Recent Project - Tea House Folly

Tea House Folly
The Tea House, possibly 18-19th century, is all that remains of the Dangan estate home of Richard Martin. It is situated slightly downstream from Menlo Castle, which was destroyed by fire in 1910, and it is thought that the Tea House was the Martin's way of "cocking a snoot" at their neighbours, the Blakes of Menlo. From the Tea House the Martins and their guests watched the activities on the river while enjoying afternoon tea.

Work on the Tea House Folly was completed in 2002. Located on NUI, Galway lands at Dangan, on the bank of the River Corrib, the Civic Trust undertook the work in partnership with NUI, Galway. This architectural curiosity had been in danger of collapse, and was completely overgrown when the Civic Trust decided to tackle it, and bring it back to its former glory. A sensitive restoration project was undertaken by our FÁS crew, under the direction of Supervisor Michael Davis, and Martin Barrett of NUI, Galway's Buildings Office. Further advice was sought from Galway City Council's Heritage Officer, Mr. Jim Higgins, who advised on the re-use of existing stone scattered around the site, and the use of traditional lime mortar in the rebuilding of collapsed sections of the building.
