Bollingbroke Fort
Bollingbroke Fort, a Cromwellian "star-shaped" fort located at Sean Mulvoy Road, was restored over an eighteen-month
period by the Galway Civic Trust. Built in July 1651 by Cromwell's forces as part of a series of siege works to enable
the invading army to take the town of Galway, Bollingbroke Fort was one of three forts, the others being located at
Bohermore and Lough Atalia.
Its original shape resembled a four-pointed star which was typical of small earthen forts of the period. Three-quarters of the fort was removed sometime in the second half of the last century and the remaining eastern section was conserved as part of a programme of works by Galway Civic Trust aimed at preserving the City's heritage. Access steps have been installed, the shape of the fort is now clearly defined, the moat surrounding it restored, and an interpretative plaque erected to tell something of the site's history.
